I originally come from Seoul, Korea. I came to the US seven years ago since my husband wanted to pursue his doctorate in the US.I lived in San Diego and Syracuse before I was settled in Ames. The reason we moved here in Ames is my husband got a job at ISU. I like the quiet and simple life in Ames. Especially, I am a very accounting and finance oriented person. I like playing with numbers. However, I like this class. It is really new in terms of the content and dynamic. I am very happy to be a part of a class. Thanks,
Hello, Professor Dimitrova and every member of the JLMC 574My name is Chen Ko-Jung, twenty-six year old. You can pronounce my name as "Cologne"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cologne), one of famous cities of Germany, or you can call me"clone" as long as these two words could help you to memorize my name. I come from Taiwan(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIBshbaha9U) which combine Chinese traditional culture with new west idea and the conflict between liberalism and conservatism, innovations and traditions of thought, has nurtured me. I have developed into an energetic and optimistic individual who is always and inspired by new things around me.I was majoring in Mass Communication in university the courses were arranged around the theory and practice of four major areas of the media: newspapers, TV, radio and magazines. During my internship in my junior, I worked as an editor and reporter on an on-line news website, learning how to apply modern new internet technology. Furthermore, I also work on my thesis, A study of evaluation on quality of TV websites – a case study on Cti TV and Era TV websites, related to internet technology. Therefore, I choose to take this class not only I'm eager to learn new idea and technology but also I think that the new communication technology is the trend of future media. I’m looking forward to embracing new theory and different experience by class members in this semester.By the way, hope you don’t mind my bad English and strange accent, but I am willing to exchange my idea and experience with yours. Hello all, I am John Thomas, an Iowa native. I am retired and a 2cd year graduate student pursuing a masters degree so that I may lecture. My undergraduate degree is from the business school at the University of Northern Iowa, (1965), 41 years ago. In 1969 I attended the U of Michigan specializing in study at their survey research institute. I had a 39 year career in advertising, public relations, marketing, brand management, retailing and consumer research. I have been married for 42 years, have two sons, one is a fine artist, the other a lawyer. I also have two grandchildren – all of us live around the Iowa City area which is East of Ames. I am very interested in diffusion; one of my great frustrations in work-life has always been getting people to adjust to change and innovation. I am really interested in understanding how to better operationalize diffusion theory into the business environment.
Hello, every here,I'm Cathy, well, you can also call me Chinese name Susu since someone told me that it was easy to remember in English as well. I am from China, the city called Shanghai which is in the south of China. That is a fantastic city, you are very welcome to visit it someday and I will be very glad to be your tour guide~~I've got my B.A. degree in contemporary literature when I was in China. I did several fieldwork as a reporter in Jiangsu provincial TV station, city channel and Xinhua Daily during my undergraduate study life. After the graduation in 2005,I went to Canada for one year to study in media and communication for my postgraduate diploma. This year, I come to ISU for my master's degree. I really love our campus, it is just so beautiful, isn't it?!I even start to think about applying for a PhD in our school just because I wanna see this campus scenery a little longer..;Pkidding~~I am working as a RA with Dr. Dave Sadalna whose specialization is within broadcasting. Currently, our research direction is how the facts work out in the 'Daily Show'. Well, so far, I just know that little about our research, and you know what, the assignments for these couple of weeks that Dr. Sadalna gave me is watching TV! which is one of my favorite hobbies..hoho..Well,I obviously know the purpose of this assignments is just for researching..Actually, I am also interested in the comparison between the western and eastern countries' broadcasting approaches. I hope I can draw some meaningful conclusions after our research before my graduation.I join our class because I wanna learn more about the relationship between technology and journalism and mass communication's development. I think that will be very helpful for my research interests. Also, personally,I come to this class because the instructor is Dr. Dimitrova. I like her voice, don't you think it is very gentle and soft~~^_^~Well, we r lucky that all the professors here are very nice people.OK~~Very nice to know all of you. Hope we all can enjoy our study life in ISU! Thanks~
Hello, everyone!I'm Tom Batkiewicz, a PhD student in Human Computer Interaction & soon, Computer Science (once I fill out the forms...). Originally from the Chicago area, I moved to Ames 7 years ago to begin my undergraduate work in Computer Science. 3 years ago, I finished my undergrad and was admitted to the HCI graduate program, and just graduated with my MS in HCI in August. I was married just over a year ago (no kids), and recently bought a house! My interests for research deal with virtual reality, and user interface design on one side, and natural language processing/synthesis on the other. I have a research assistantship at the Virtual Reality Applications Center, where I work on a project for the Air Force dealing with future interfaces for battle commanders.I think we have a great class, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about the social impact of technologies with all of you. Have a good one!- Tom
Hello, everybody.I’m Poong. I am from Seoul, Korea. This is my first visiting in America. Everything is unfamiliar and strange to me. But thanks to kind people, I am pretty well accommodated. Now I feel more comfortable that I expected.I have read a lot of books and papers written by American scholars. Although I have a high regard for their academic achievement, I don’t think their theories and hypotheses can always be well applied to the Korean situations because there are huge difference between US and Korea. So, I want to understand the social, political, historical, and cultural background from which their theories and hypotheses came. I believe this understanding can help me to apply them to more particular situations and become a fundamental basis to generalize them. That is the reason why I came to U.S.A. My interest is in the influence of technological changes on the social relations among social actors: political, economical, communicative actors, and so on. I never consider the introduction of new communication technology as advance or development, because it might bring irreparable social problems. For example, as R. Putnam said, personalized (or customized) media reduce face-to-face contacts among people, and therefore, devastate communities and social norms. I went too much. I have to leave something to talk later.Anyway, I am really glad to meet you guys and have chance to share ideas and opinions with you.
Hello! I'm Helen Colvin. I'm finishing up my coursework for my MBA and my MS in Human Computer interaction. My thesis for HCI is on the acceptance of domestic technologies. My undergraduate degree, also from Iowa State, was in Computer Engineering. I'm married; my husband also has both his master's and bachelor's degrees from ISU.
Hello, I'm Kyung Sun, or Karen Lee. I'm from South Korea, and I recently finished my undergraduate studies in Journalism and Mass Comm. I wasn't originally interested in continuing my studies in the same field but have been motivated to do so ever since I was in Kenya last winter. In Kenya, I worked as a volunteer, who unfortunately had no professional skills and therefore spent most of the time just making bricks for a classroom. After much frustration, I decided to continue my studies in the communication and hopefully, become a professional enough to possibly find myself in an NGO specializing in development communication area. This is one of my reasons for starting my master's at ISU this fall. By the way, I am very sorry for the late posting. This will be my first and last!
Hello everyone. My name is Xiaomin Qian. You can call me Xiaomin. I come from China. My family name "Qian" means money in Chinese language. Actually, this is a title for a government officer in the old times. My undergraduate major is Chinese language and literature. After graduation, I worked as an economic journalist in Xinhua News Agency for two years. Then I married. Because my husband came to the US for his Ph.D study, I gave up my job and followed him. On the other hand, this is also a chance for me to continue my academic study and pursue a master's degree in journalism. I plan to back to China later and become a professional journalist with what I learnt here.Cooking is one of my interests. I learnt how to make cheese cake, how to bake pizza when I come to Ames. You can come to my home and have a taste. Everybody is welcome.
